Plants of stock 1-78 appear yellow green, Ygr3, on cotyledons, leaves, stems and developing pods.
In the dwarf genetic background, leaves, stems, and flowers are reduced in size.
Stock 1-78 is selected for high expression of purple anthocyanin, Pan (8).
In the early seedling stages of growth, the purple color may mask the yellow green, Ygr1, phenotype. The intensity of Pan expression is variable, Pan (0-9), and is increased by light, nutrient and water stress, low temperature and other environmental factors.
Pan appears to be quantitatively inherited and may be quantified by scaling, using a color comparator scale, Pan (0-9). There appear to be major genes or loci that influence the intensity and location of Pan expression, e.g. on the cotyledons, hydathodes, sepal tips and style.
The yellow-green background, Ygr3, was created in Brassica rapa through mutagenesis by Gary Stringham and introduced into the rapid-cycling Brassica rapa background through selection and breeding.
